CS201 Assignment 1 Solution Fall 2026

CS201 Introduction to Programming Assignment 1 for Fall 2026 asks for a C++ program that builds a University IT Helpdesk Workload Report. The program takes five service desks, assigns each a number of tickets extracted from digits of the student’s VU ID, computes a resolution time of 20 minutes per ticket, assigns a workload status, and prints a summary. The submission must be only a .cpp file on VULMS. The solution file linked below contains the complete program, which was compiled and run to verify its output.

What Does the Solution File Cover?

How Are Tickets Assigned to the Desks?

The program hard-codes the student name and VU ID, then extracts five digits from the numeric part of the ID using division and remainder operations: the 2nd digit goes to Network Support, the 4th to Computer Lab Support, the 5th to LMS Support, the 6th to Account Support, and the 8th to Hardware Support. With the example ID BC123456789, the extracted digits are 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8, so the desks receive 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 tickets respectively. Replace the name and ID with your own before submitting, since your digits, and therefore your whole report, will change with your ID. The same ID-digit technique appears in the CS201P Assignment 1 solution on the water refill depot billing program.

How Are Resolution Time and Status Computed?

Each ticket takes 20 minutes, so resolution time is tickets multiplied by 20. Status follows the thresholds in the program: 7 or more tickets is HEAVY, 4 to 6 tickets is MODERATE, and fewer than 4 is LIGHT. With the example ID, Network Support has 2 tickets and 40 minutes for LIGHT, Computer Lab Support has 4 tickets and 80 minutes for MODERATE, LMS Support has 5 tickets and 100 minutes for MODERATE, Account Support has 6 tickets and 120 minutes for MODERATE, and Hardware Support has 8 tickets and 160 minutes for HEAVY. The summary counts 1 LIGHT desk, 3 MODERATE desks and 1 HEAVY desk. The program was compiled with g++ and run, and this output matches the run exactly.

How Do You Download the Solution File?

You can download the complete .cpp solution file from Google Drive using the link below. Submit only the .cpp file on VULMS, as the assignment requires. Before submitting, replace the placeholder name and the example VU ID with your own details, recompile, and confirm the report matches your own digits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why must the submission be only a .cpp file?

The assignment interface accepts only a .cpp file for this task, and other formats receive zero marks. Save the program with a .cpp extension and upload exactly that file, not a document or a screenshot of the output.

How does digit extraction with division and remainder work?

Dividing by a power of 10 drops the rightmost digits, and the remainder after dividing by 10 keeps only the last remaining digit. For example, (123456789 / 10000000) % 10 first drops seven digits to leave 12, then keeps the last digit, 2, which is the 2nd digit of the ID.

What happens if I submit with the example ID?

Your report would show another student’s digits and ticket counts instead of your own, which is exactly how copied solutions get caught. Always replace the name and ID with your own and re-run the program before submitting.
